THE STORY OF LIFE AND LIVING

Tunde was a bright high school student and the eldest son of large family. He had many great visions to change society and wanted to become a social entrepreneur on Victoria Island. One day he was invited by some of his friends to a party where they began to drink alcohol and eventually became drunk. Each of his friends went off to sleep with girls and strongly encouraged him to do likewise. Tunde hesitated but eventually followed their lead. During intercourse he used a condom which slipped off in the act. After, he said to a friend, “I wonder if I have AIDS?” His friend answered with looking alarmed, “People with AIDS get sores all over their body, lose weight, and get all kinds of special diseases like TB, cancer. They always die. It’s a miserable way to go. You had better check with a doctor.” Tunde discovered he was HIV positive, and died a few years later from AIDS.

No one wants to die like Tunde, we are all longing for an AIDS free world. The whole world is looking the clinical solution by discovering vaccine, and or stopping transmission through the wide use of condoms. But is it really possible to stop? After hearing my opinion you may think of me as a crazy person, as did one of my favourite teachers. When I expressed my ideas during discussion on AIDS prevention, I was scolded and stridently pushed out from his room. He said, “I don’t like mullahtontro (militant ideology). You can go now!” I was shocked by his rejection, and thought, “Am I right in my position as a development activist? Do my ideas favour the establishment of true human dignity?” The teacher believes and promotes the culture of ‘sexual freedom’. He refused as he felt my idea was ancient, backdated and religiously makeup-ed, but I have strong confidence that there is no alternative way. There are bright sides of religious ideas, such as advancing civilizations, protection of human kind from spiritual suffering and developing the formal and practical shapes of moral and ethical values.

In order to stop AIDS, we have to first find out the causes and the ways it’s spreading. According to the UNAIDS worldwide 85% HIV is transmitted by sex and the remaining 15% through sharing injection, drug needles, blood, birth or breast feeding by HIV positive mother, etc. From UNAIDS findings it is easily to see that the main reason AIDS is spreading is unsafe sex, that is, the ‘misuse of sex and love’.

Not only my teacher, but also the UN, most of all responsible activists and organisations, are promoting superficial solutions to AIDS. Sustaining movements against AIDS opens a great business for condom and media companies. It is the best time to promote the ‘culture of absolute sex’ instead of ‘safe sex culture’ through effective use media and ICT opportunities. I believe, sex is the most divine and joyful act of this universe by which human being come to the world. It should be practiced with its absolute standard. But nowadays it is contaminated and negatively influenced by the unethical media influence and too much emphasis on physical desires. The source of joy and creation is converted now into a source of suffering. We have to awake up and open our eyes, and need to avoid the unconscious, animal-like sex practices which severely violate women’s rights, child rights and rights of deprived groups. We know, the main purpose of life is the accomplishment of God’s blessings, that is to be a matured individual, an ideal husband/wife, responsible parents and citizens as well as leaders who take care of their community, country, world as well as their environment.
